Summer Workshop on Quantitative Methods in Political Science

Lokniti - Programme for Comparative Democracy, Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS), Delhi, in collaboration with Jain University, Bengaluru, invites applications for the Summer Workshop on ‘Analyzing Quantitative Data on Indian Politics’ to be held in Bengaluru from Friday, 14th May 2010 to Monday, 24th May 2010.

This is the fourth Summer School being organized by Lokniti-CSDS. Earlier Workshops were organized in association with IIAS, Shimla and University of Michigan. Some of the leading scholars working on empirical methods in Political Science have been involved in designing this summer school. In this Summer School there will be a special emphasis on making sense of quantitative data on Indian politics. We plan to bring together a group of political scientists with the aim of providing them an opportunity to improve their skills in quantitative analysis. The selected participants will be given a set of readings before they come to attend the workshop and will be expected to attend lectures and practical data analysis sessions. Pradeep Chhibber (University of California at Berkeley) and Irfan Nooruddin (Ohio State University) will be the main resource persons for the workshop while other resource persons will include Ashutosh Varshney (Brown University), Sandeep Shastri (Jain University), Sanjay Kumar (CSDS) and Suhas Palshikar (University of Pune).

We invite the following categories of candidates to apply for this workshop 

(preference will be given to young researchers):
 

  • Teachers of Political Science in colleges and Universities who are working on empirical subjects and would benefit from further training.
  • Research students of Political Science who are working on empirical themes for their M. Phil. or Ph. D. dissertations and can benefit from further training.
  • Any other person (including those from outside Political Science and outside academia) who are interested in making sense of politics by analyzing quantitative data.  
 Please send your detailed CV with a statement of research interest (those already registered for M. Phil. or Ph.D. should clearly mention the topic of dissertation along with a brief summary of the objectives and methodologies used) in about 500 words. State Government Scholarship

The objective of the Scheme is to provide financial assistance to the poor and meritorious students belonging to minority communities to enable them to pursue professional and technical courses.


These scholarships are available for studies in India only and will be awarded through an Agency designated by the State Government/UT Administration for this purpose.


21,748 StateScholarship will be distributed among the students of minority communities throughout the State.



Important Instructions:

  • Date for Submission of State Government Scholarship form is extended upto 8 March 2010.
  • Candidates pursing courses ( BA, B.Com., B. Sc, LLB, B.Ed etc and PG courses ) under Higher Education should download the application form, fill it completely, attach required documents and submit to respective Institute by 8th March 2010 which are to forward it to Joint Director office of Higher Education.
  • For State Government Scholarships for Minority communities, the candidate can give affidavit on Rs. 10/- Court Fee Stamp/ Revenue Stamp also.

    Internship Programme of the Department of Economic Affairs for 2010 – 11.

               Department of Economic Affairs has the mandate to carry out not only the economic diplomacy but also to build and maintain the economic health of the country, which essentially envisages close interaction with various financial institutions, both domestic and international.   
    2.         The need for an Internship Programme for the Department has been felt for quite sometime, which is beneficial to both the Department and the intern.  The Internship Programme will ensure interaction of the officers of the Department with the young scholars with brilliant academic background from reputed academic institutions in the country.  While refreshing ideas from the field of academics will enable the Department to critically analyse its activity and take corrective steps in an objective and impartial manner, it will also simultaneously provide an excellent opportunity to the brilliant interns to familiarize themselves with the over all process of formulation of economic policy of the Government at the macro level.   
    3.         The interns especially from reputed Economic Institutes/ Schools/ National Management Institutes/ National Law Schools are expected to be instruments par excellence in adding flavour to the functioning of the Department.  DEA would be able to assign such interns specific areas of work, especially relating to procedures and economic laws administered by the Department.  The particular fields could be Capital Markets, Economic Reforms at macro level, Development Assistance to India from multilateral / bilateral financial institutions/ countries, Exchange Management, Foreign Investment in India and Indian Investment abroad, Monetary Policy, Fiscal Policy, Tariff Policy, Domestic Regulations, Inflation Management, Debt Market Operation and Debt Management (External and Domestic), Small Savings, Modernisation of Budget Documents etc.   
    4.         The objective and guidelines/ salient features of the Internship Programme of the Department of Economic Affairs for Undergraduates of five year integrated course in Law/ Graduates pursuing Post-Graduation / Post-Graduates pursuing Research, approved by the competent authority, are given below :  
    Objective
    • To familiarize the willing and eligible Undergraduates pursuing five year integrated course in Law and Graduates pursuing Post-Graduation/ Postgraduates pursuing Research in Economics/ Finance/ Management with the overall process of formulation of economic policies of the Government at macro level.
    • It is neither a job nor any such assurance for a job in the Department of Economic Affairs.
    Eligibility
    Students possessing first class graduation degree pursuing Post Graduation / high second class post-graduation degree (with at least 55% marks) pursuing Research courses in Economics/ Finance/ Management at National Schools of Economics / Central Universities/ Recognized Financial/ Economic Institutions/ Recognized National Management Institutes can apply for internship.  Students with at least 80% marks in 12th Standard pursuing five year integrated course in Law (only in fourth & fifth year of study) from the National Law Schools at Bangalore , Bhopal , Hyderabad and Kolkata are also eligible.
    Duration
    Duration of internship will be two months at different points of time during 2010-11 (other than December to February).
    Token Remuneration
    Token remuneration @ Rs.5,000/- per month per intern, payable on satisfactory completion of their internships and on submission of their Report/ Paper.
    Declaration of Secrecy
    Interns are required to furnish to the Department a declaration of secrecy before reporting for the internship.
    Logistics Support
    Interns will be provided with the necessary logistics support, i.e. office space and computer with internet facility.
    Placement
    The interns would be attached with one of the DS/ Director level officer in the concerned Division of the Department.
    Submission of Paper
    The interns will be required to present  to the concerned Head of Division a Report/ Paper on the allotted subject at the end of the internship.  Simultaneously, they will also be required to give to the concerned HoD their mandatory feedback on their experience of the Programme, monitoring and supervision by the JS concerned.
    Certificate of Internship
    Certificates will be issued to the interns on satisfactory completion of their internships and on submission of their Report/ Paper.
    How to Apply
    The interested and eligible students are to send their applications, along with their CVs in the enclosed prescribed format to Joint Secretary (Administration), Department of Economic Affairs, North Block, New Delhi latest by 2nd March, 2010 .
    Selection
    All the applications will be scrutinized by the Selection Committee.  The actual offer will be sent to the selected interns subject to availability of slots, consent of the concerned Division and approval of the Selection Committee.  The Department shall accommodate interns not exceeding fifteen in a financial year.

    An Introduction to the Taiwan Scholarship Program

    I. Purpose

    The Taiwan Scholarship Program was established jointly by three government agencies of the Republic of China (Taiwan) --- the Ministry of Education (MOE), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) and the National Science Council of the Executive Yuan (NSC) --- to encourage outstanding international students to undertake degree programs in Taiwan. While providing study opportunities for a wide range of disciplines, at Taiwan's universities and colleges, this program also aims to:
    Promote knowledge, understanding and friendship between people in Taiwan and in countries around the world.
    Provide opportunities to increase academic and educational links with international institutions of higher learning.
    Develop outstanding professionals and experts to meet the needs of the global society.

    II. The Focus of Government Agencies Funding the Taiwan Scholarships

    There are three government agencies that fund this program, each with a different focus in terms of recipients' nationalities and study programs:
    MOFA Scholarship:
    Recipients from countries that have diplomatic relations with the R.O.C. (Taiwan) or countries specified as being diplomatically favorable by MOFA.
    Undergraduate and/or postgraduate degree programs. Embassies of the R.O.C. can also award a pre-degree Mandarin Language Enrichment Program (LEP) scholarship to recipients to improve their language abilities.
     
    MOE Scholarship:
    Recipients from countries other than those specified in the MOFA Scholarship.
    Undergraduate and/or postgraduate programs. R.O.C.'s overseas offices can also designate a pre-degree Mandarin Language Enrichment Program (LEP) to recipients to improve their language abilities.

    NSC Scholarship:
    Recipients from countries other than those specified in the MOFA Scholarship. Postgraduate programs only.

    III. Duration of Award
    The award period for each degree/study program is as follows:
    Undergraduate program: maximum 4 years.
    Master's program: maximum 2 years.
    Doctoral program: maximum 3 years.
    LEP: maximum 1 year.

    The Institute for Robotics and Cognitive Systems (www.rob.uni-luebeck.de) at the University of Lübeck has 1open PhD position in the area of robotics, in particular in the clinical applications of neuroscience.
    The position is part of the PhD programme at the Graduate School for Computing in Medicine and Life Sciences (www.gradschool.uni-luebeck.de). The PhD position is funded for 3 years with a scholarship of 1250 EUR per month, with possible increase.

    Project description:



    Evaluating spatial and temporal correlation between electrophysiological signals and involuntary motion“: Robotic interventional systems are used to compensate for undesired patient motion. While fixation or sedation of the patient will inhibit voluntary motion, involuntary motion is harder to control. This research project aims at determining the temporal and spatial correlation between electrophysiological signals, and involuntary motion of the patient as well as live 3D tracking modalities.

    Reimbursement of fees of candidates from minority communities

    NOTIFICATION
    Reimbursement of fees of candidates from minority communities enrolled for  Employment –oriented courses As per a GR dated January 4, 2009 issued by the Maharashtra Government (ref. no to be translated and added here), students from minority communities (Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, Jains Sikhs and Parsis) studying for courses being conducted by Technical Training Institutes/Engineering Colleges under their Continuing Education/Technical Education/Open University programmes will be reimbursed course fees subject to a maximum of Rs.4,000. The scheme will benefit around 5,000 students enrolled for/having completed any of the applicable courses during 2009-2010. For this purpose, applications in the prescribed form are invited from eligible students
    Terms and conditions of the Scheme:


    • Selection of beneficiary students will be based on the marks obtained in SSC/HSC examinations.
    • The annual family income of the students must be less than Rs.2.5 lakh
    • The applicants should be Indian nationals belonging to any of the above specified minority communities and should be domiciled in Maharashtra.
    • 30% of the total seats are reserved for girls.

    Documents to be attached with the application:
    • A signed passport sized photograph of the student.
    • Attested SSC/HSC marksheets.
    • The applicants should furnish ANY ONE of the following as proof of domicile: Ration card/Electricity or Telephone Bill/Passport/Voter Identity Card. 
    • Proof of Religion OR School Leaving Certificate indicating the religion of the student OR an affidavit on a Rs. 100 non-judicial stamp paper. 
    • In case of self-employment a declaration on a non-judicial stamp paper detailing the annual income from all sources/ In case of those employed, a salary certificate from the employer/True Copy of Income Tax Returns/Income certificate from the Tehsildar. Declaration of religion and annual income can be combined in a single declaration.
    Candidates must submit their application in the prescribed form along with the required documents with their respective Head of the Institution.
